What Is FIRE?

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. It's a movement built around saving and investing aggressively — typically 50–70% of income — so you can leave traditional employment decades before the conventional retirement age of 65. The core idea: once your investment portfolio generates enough passive income to cover your expenses indefinitely, you're financially independent.

How Is the FIRE Number Calculated?

Your FIRE number is your annual expenses divided by your safe withdrawal rate. At the standard 4% rate, the formula is: Annual Expenses Г— 25 = FIRE Number. So if you plan to spend $40,000/year in retirement, you need $1,000,000 invested. At $60,000/year, you need $1,500,000. The 4% rule comes from the Trinity Study, which found that a 4% annual withdrawal from a balanced portfolio had a high probability of lasting 30 years historically.

Lean FIRE vs. Regular FIRE vs. Fat FIRE

Lean FIRE targets annual spending under $40,000 and requires a portfolio of $1,000,000 or less. Regular FIRE targets $50,000– $80,000/year spending with a $1.25M–$2M portfolio. Fat FIRE targets $100,000+ per year and requires $2.5M+. Your target depends on your lifestyle and what "enough" means to you.
